Sunday, July 4: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. My stomach required a couple doses of less-drowsy dramamine to get here. We took a taxi, then a train, then a taxi, then an airplane then a van to the hotel. That was a little too much movement for me. Thank God for dramamine. We arrived last night at 5:30 PM at the Nanning Airport. Our guide met us at the airport; her name is Cindy and she is very nice. Our driver is Mr. Lee. Cindy got us settled into the Majestic Hotel and said she'd be back on Monday at 2PM for Gotcha Day.
We needed a few things so at 8PM we headed to the local WALMART! Yes, Walmart is here and is VERY popular! We could barely get to the second floor of the store and don't even try to cut through the Rotisserie Chicken line! There were at least 30 people waiting for it! It was a lot of fun! We were on a search for a curling iron for Sherri. After 3 stores, and lots of crazy looks as we tried to describe what we were looking for in sign language (it was especially funny because it was Matt who was pretending to curl his hair...), we determined Chinese women don't use these - they are nowhere to be found. We even peeked in one styling salon and there were none in use there.
As we shopped, locals would stare and say "hi" in English, but that was the extent of their English vocab. Things are pretty crowded here, and the streets can be difficult to cross...
We bought a pork noodle soup at a side cafe then Gelato (ice cream) and set on a bench watching the locals watch us. We caught a taxi back to the hotel at about 10PM when the mall and other shops were closing.
Monday, July 5:
Today is Gotcha Day!!! We will meet Kelina in just 2 hours! We already connected with some other wonderful adoption families. One is Jean and family from our Guilin Yahoo group whom we communicated with via email before the trip. Her daughters are coming from Kelina's orphanage. Everything is ready and so are we! We are surprisingly calm for such a big day. It must be because we have waited so long for this day, that we feel very prepared. Will post pics as soon as we can!
